"Live! At Last," recorded in April 1995 at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Massachusetts and released in 1996 on Rounder Records (C-0339), is the most commercially successful album by Dry Branch Fire Squad. The traditional bluegrass ensemble — founded by Ron Thomason in 1976 and named for the small southwest Virginia community where he was born — is represented here by Thomason (mandolin, lead vocals, literary between-song monologues), Bill Evans (banjo), Mary Jo Leet (guitar, vocals), Suzanne Thomas (guitar, vocals), and Charlie Leet. The album captures the humor and musicianship that made the band a festival institution; Thomason, who has taught college-level math and English, is as celebrated for his dry, erudite stage patter as for his playing. The band has headlined Hardly Strictly Bluegrass every year since 2003.
