Live at the Cellar Door cover

Live at the Cellar Door, recorded in 1975 at the legendary Washington DC club and released on Rebel Records, is among the finest live documents the progressive bluegrass era produced. The Seldom Scene — John Duffey, Mike Auldridge, Tom Gray, John Starling, and Ben Eldridge — had by 1975 built a devoted following at the Cellar Door, and the recording catches the easy rapport between musicians who trusted each other completely and an audience that had grown up with them. The live setting freed the band from studio precision and let Duffey's sardonic stage presence emerge alongside the music's genuine beauty. The album became a touchstone for listeners who wanted proof that bluegrass could fill a listening room the way jazz could.
