“Muddy Water” is a song written by Phil Rosenthal, a songwriter who would later join the Seldom Scene as its guitarist and lead singer. The Seldom Scene, the Washington, D.C., bluegrass band, recorded the song and made it a fixture of their repertoire.
The lyric is a flood song. Its narrator watches a rising river — the muddy water creeping up, threatening home and family — in the tradition of American songs about the great floods of the lower Mississippi. That vivid sense of natural disaster and helplessness gave the song real dramatic weight.
“Muddy Water” traveled well beyond bluegrass: it was later recorded by artists as varied as Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. It remains one of the better-known songs associated with the Seldom Scene and a strong example of Rosenthal’s songwriting.
