Live at the Lone Star Festival captures Don Reno, Red Smiley, Bill Harrell, and the Tennessee Cut-Ups at McKinney, Texas in July 1971 — a live document of one of the more remarkable bluegrass partnerships of the era, with Red Smiley returning to perform alongside the Reno-Harrell working band. The festival circuit Reno worked through the 1970s was where the bluegrass community gathered each summer for outdoor concerts that mixed established acts and rising bands. The album would not see commercial release for years, eventually appearing on later labels; as a live document of the Reno-Smiley-Harrell working unit at full strength, it preserves a configuration that the partnership's various health setbacks would soon make impossible to assemble again.
