Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House

The Wailin’ Jennys

Album · 2009 · Red House RHR CD 220

Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House was recorded at the opera house in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 2008, by Kent Heckman, and produced and mixed by David Travers-Smith. It was the Wailin’ Jennys’ first live album, the first to feature Heather Masse alongside founding members Ruth Moody and Nicky Mehta, and it includes eight songs that had not appeared on any earlier Jennys recording. The group issued it in Canada on Outside Music on 28 July 2009 and in the United States on Red House Records (RHR CD 220) on 11 August 2009, and it spent more than a year on Billboard’s bluegrass charts.

The Jennys began in Winnipeg, Manitoba, when solo singer-songwriters came together for a one-time performance at a small guitar shop. On the album Masse plays upright bass, Mehta guitar, drums, harmonica and ukulele, and Moody guitar, banjo, accordion and bodhrán, with Jeremy Penner on violin and mandolin. The fourteen songs include “Deeper Well,” “Bold Riley,” “Glory Bound,” “Arlington,” “Calling All Angels” and “One More Dollar,” the last with a violin solo from Penner.
