Live in Japan

J.D. Crowe and the New South

Album · 1982 · Rounder 0159

Live in Japan documents a concert J.D. Crowe and the New South played at the Kosei Nenkin Sho Hall in Tokyo on 18 April 1979. A recording of the concert came out in Japan the same year on Trio Records as Live in Tokyo; Rounder issued it in the United States in 1987 as Live in Japan (Rounder 0159).

The band was Keith Whitley on guitar and lead vocals, Crowe on banjo and baritone, Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin and tenor, Bobby Slone on fiddle and Steve Bryant on electric bass. Whitley had just left Ralph Stanley’s band, and the tour was Crowe’s second to Japan, after one in August 1975.

The program leans on country songs: Harlan Howard’s “She’s Gone, Gone, Gone,” Fred Rose’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” John Conlee’s “Rose Colored Glasses” and “Railroad Lady” by Jimmy Buffett and Jerry Jeff Walker, with the instrumentals “Shuckin’ the Corn” and “Memphis Mandolin.” On the second side a single 8:15 track strings together the Martha White theme, “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” and “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.”
