Love and Other Tragedies (self-released, 2008) is the debut full-length studio album from Red Molly — the New York-based trio of Abbie Gardner (resonator guitar, vocals), Carolann Solebello (guitar, vocals), and Laurie MacAllister (bass, vocals). Produced by Ben Wisch, the album showcases the three-part vocal harmonies and genre-blending songwriting — drawing on folk, bluegrass, Americana, and country — that would become the group's trademark. The trio had formed in 2004, taking their name from the Richard Thompson song "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," and built a following on the northeastern acoustic circuit before recording here. Thirteen tracks ranging from original compositions to carefully chosen covers established Red Molly as a distinctive voice in contemporary acoustic music.
