Love and Other Tragedies (2008) is Red Molly’s first studio album, following the 2005 four-song EP and the live Never Been to Vegas (2006). The trio, Abbie Gardner, Laurie MacAllister and Carolann Solebello, formed in 2004 at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and took their name from the character in Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.” Ben Wisch produced the thirteen-track album, which was recorded and mixed in January 2008 at his studio in New York. Guests include Fred Gillen Jr., Jake Armerding, Mike Weatherling, Duke Levine, Steve Kirkman and Anthony Da Costa.

Five of the songs are originals: Carolann Solebello’s “Summertime,” Abbie Gardner’s “Honey on My Grave” and “The Mind of a Soldier,” and Laurie MacAllister’s “This Farm Needs a Man” and “Beaumont Rest Stop.” Gardner’s “The Mind of a Soldier” won the folk category of the 2008 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. The rest are covers and traditional songs: Gillian Welch’s “Wichita,” Amy Speace’s “Make Me Lonely Again,” Mitchell Parish’s “Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia,” Susan Werner’s “May I Suggest,” and the traditional “Wayfaring Stranger” and “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning.” “May I Suggest” closes the album and is sung a cappella.
