Me ’n Ole Pete was recorded in Nashville at Gusto Recording Studio, on Dickerson Road, around 1978, and released that year on Gusto (GT 0067) under the name Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. Martin sings lead and plays guitar, and Chris Warner is credited on banjo throughout. The musicians named for the sessions also include J.D. Crowe and Kenny Ingram on banjo, Robbie Blake on mandolin, Gene Wooten on Dobro, Blaine Sprouse, Red Taylor and Tommy Haglund on fiddle, Roy Huskey on bass, and Gloria Belle on backing vocals; who plays on which track is not documented for most of the album.
Martin’s hobby was raccoon hunting with dogs, and he wrote songs about his hunting dogs and put them on his album covers. Two titles here are about Pete: “Run Pete Run,” written by Martin and Fancy Woodring, and Tom T. Hall’s “Pete, the Best Coon Dog in the State of Tennessee.” Gloria Belle sings harmony on both, and on “Play Me Some George Jones Songs” and “Knoxville Girl”; Lisa Martin sings harmony on “Beautiful Brown Eyes.” Martin and Moe Lytle are credited with the arrangements of “Knoxville Girl,” “Beautiful Brown Eyes,” “Lover’s Lane” and “Sweet Little Maggie.” Charlie Monroe wrote “Who’s Calling You Sweetheart Tonight,” Jimmy Skinner “I’m a Bluegrass Singing Man,” and “Eagle Eye Tom,” credited to Martin and Thomas Haglund, is the one instrumental.
