Patty Loveless

Album · 2009 · Saguaro Road 3190

Mountain Soul II (Saguaro Road, released 29 September 2009) is Patty Loveless’s follow-up to Mountain Soul, from 2001. Emory Gordy Jr. produced it. Most of the tracks were recorded at Quad Studios in Nashville, and George Massenburg mixed the album. Of the fifteen songs, four had been on earlier Loveless albums: “Half Over You,” “Blue Memories,” “Feelings of Love” and “A Handful of Dust.”

The credits include Bryan Sutton (guitar, banjo, mandolin), Ronnie McCoury (mandolin), Mike Auldridge and Rob Ickes (dobro), and Deanie Richardson (fiddle), with Jason Carter, Stuart Duncan, Carl Jackson, Del McCoury, Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris on individual tracks. Harlan Howard’s “Busted” was the first single, with Del McCoury singing the chorus lead, and “Diamond in My Crown” features Emmylou Harris. “The Bramble and the Rose,” written by Barbara Keith, is played by Sutton on guitar, McCoury on mandolin, Richardson on fiddle, Auldridge on dobro and Gordy on bass. The album won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011; Mountain Soul had been nominated in the same category in 2002.
