Mountain Tracks Vol. 5 cover

Mountain Tracks: Volume 5 is a double-disc live album that Yonder Mountain String Band released on its own Frog Pad Records on 15 April 2008 (FP 0408), the fifth volume of the Mountain Tracks series. One disc is a concert recorded in July 2007 at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio; the other is a compilation of live recordings the band chose from 2004 through 2007, sequenced to follow the order of a concert.

The band formed in December 1998 in Nederland, Colorado, and the four members on this album are the founding four: Jeff Austin on mandolin, Adam Aijala on guitar, Dave Johnston on banjo and Ben Kaufmann on bass. The songs are largely their own: Austin, Kaufmann and Aijala each have writing credits, including Kaufmann’s instrumental “40 Miles From Denver.” Older material appears too, among it the traditional “Boatman’s Dance” and “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down,” a Stanley song, “If I Lose,” and Bill Monroe’s instrumental “Kentucky Mandolin.”
