Native and Fine

Bill Evans

Album · 1995 · Rounder C 0295

Native and Fine, released in 1995 on Rounder (CD 0295), is banjo player Bill Evans's solo debut, a record nearly two decades in the making. Evans builds a thoughtful program of banjo-led instrumentals and vocals, with five originals anchoring the set, drawing on a guest list that includes David Grier, Stuart Duncan, Mike Compton, Jason Carter, Ron Thomason, and Suzanne Thomas. The result lives on the progressive-traditional edge of the Rounder catalog rather than its straight-ahead end. Evans was touring with Dry Branch Fire Squad at the time, and the album earned an NAIRD honorable mention for Acoustic Instrumental Recording of 1996. The record introduced Evans to a national audience that would later know him as banjo teacher, scholar, and clinician as much as player.
