No Part of Nothin’

Mark Lavengood

Album · 2014 · Earthwork CD 2703

No Part of Nothin', released in 2014, is the debut full-length from Mark Lavengood, the Michigan dobro player and singer known for his big tone and easygoing stage presence. Recorded with his working Michigan band, the album is notable in hindsight for its personnel: a young Billy Strings plays guitar here, years before his own rise, alongside Keith Billik on banjo and Ben Rolston on bass. The material ranges across bluegrass, old-time, and roots songwriting, with Lavengood's resonator guitar and warm lead vocals at the center. The playing is loose and communal — the sound of a regional scene's strongest players enjoying one another's company. No Part of Nothin' stands both as a confident first statement from Lavengood and as an early document of the Michigan acoustic circle that would soon draw national attention through Strings, a record made by friends before any of them were widely known.
