Old Train cover

Old Train, released on Rebel in 1974, captures the Seldom Scene's classic founding lineup near the height of its early powers — John Duffey on mandolin and tenor, John Starling on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Auldridge on dobro, Tom Gray on bass, and Ben Eldridge on banjo. By this point the Washington, D.C. band's weeknight residencies had made it a fixture of the urban folk and bluegrass scene, and its appetite for material beyond the traditional canon was central to its appeal. The set moves easily between gospel numbers like 'Working on a Building' and contemporary songs reworked for the band's signature blend of Duffey's high tenor and Auldridge's fluid dobro. Old Train belongs to the run of mid-1970s Rebel recordings on which the Seldom Scene defined progressive bluegrass — not a departure from tradition so much as a widening of what it could hold.
