Old Train is the Seldom Scene’s fourth album, issued on Rebel in 1974 (SLP 1536) and recorded in March of that year at Track Recorders in Washington, D.C. The band was its original lineup: John Starling on guitar and lead vocals, John Duffey on mandolin and tenor, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Mike Auldridge on dobro and Tom Gray on bass. Paul Craft played guitar on five of the songs, and the guests included Ricky Skaggs on fiddle and viola, Linda Ronstadt on vocals and Bob Williams on harmonica. The cover shows a steam locomotive, Baltimore and Ohio No. 5303, the President Madison.

Herb Pedersen wrote “Wait a Minute,” and he and Nikki Pedersen wrote the title song. Paul Craft contributed “Appalachian Rain,” an instrumental, and “Through the Bottom of the Glass.” Starling wrote “Different Roads” and “C & O Canal.” The rest of the twelve tracks include Hank Williams’s “Pan American” and Don Reno’s “Maybe You Will Change Your Mind.”
