On the Road: A Tribute to John Hartford is a fifteen-track various-artists album released by LoHi Records in June 2020 to benefit MusiCares. Hartford — banjo player, fiddler, riverboat pilot and the writer of “Gentle on My Mind” — occupies an odd place in this music: a songwriter whose biggest hit paid for a career spent well outside the mainstream, and whose Aereo-Plain band gave the newgrass movement its licence. The performers here come from the jam and progressive end of the roots world: Sam Bush opens with “On the Road,” and Fruition, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, the Travelin' McCourys, Railroad Earth and Keller Williams each take a song. The Infamous Stringdusters contribute “Gentle on My Mind,” the song most listeners know, returned to the string band it came from.
