Once and For Always, released on Sugar Hill in 1985, captures Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver at the close of an important early chapter — it was the last record to feature the lineup built around banjoist Terry Baucom and guitarist Jimmy Haley, the personnel that had established the band's reputation for immaculate ensemble work. Lawson, a mandolinist and arranger who came up through J.D. Crowe's band and the Country Gentlemen, brought a bandleader's discipline to both the secular and sacred sides of the repertoire, and Quicksilver's gospel quartet singing was already among the finest in the music. The album balances hard bluegrass with the instrument-backed and a cappella gospel that would become a signature. It stands as a document of one of the genre's most consistently excellent ensembles just before a turn in its membership.
