Once And For Always

Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver

Album · 1985 · Sugar Hill SH-C 3744

Once and for Always (Sugar Hill SH-3744, 1985) was the last album Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver made with Terry Baucom on banjo, Jimmy Haley on guitar and Randy Graham on bass. Lawson had formed the band in 1979 after leaving the Country Gentlemen, with Haley, Baucom and bassist Lou Reid; it first recorded for Sugar Hill with that lineup (Rock My Soul, 1981), and Graham was the bassist by the time of Heavenly Treasures. Before Quicksilver, Lawson had played banjo and then mandolin with Jimmy Martin and spent time with J.D. Crowe’s Kentucky Mountain Boys.

The eleven songs share a single lineup: Lawson on mandolin and fiddle, Haley on guitar, Baucom on banjo and Graham on bass, with Mike Auldridge on dobro and pedal steel guitar. All four Quicksilver members sing. The material includes the title song, “Come Back to Me in My Dreams,” “Carolina in the Pines,” “Julie Ann,” “Stone Cold Heart,” “A Lover of the Lord” and “When the Sun of My Life Goes Down.” Haley is credited as writer of “You Only Have to Say You’ve Changed Your Mind.”

After this album Graham, Baucom and Haley left. Lawson hired guitarist Russell Moore, banjoist Scott Vestal and bassist Curtis Vestal, and the next Quicksilver album, Beyond the Shadows (1986), is by that group with Auldridge again on dobro.
