Once and For Always, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver's 2006 release, arrives deep in the catalog of one of the most consistently excellent bands in late-twentieth-century bluegrass. Lawson, whose musical education included stints with J.D. Crowe and the Country Gentlemen, founded Quicksilver in 1979 with an explicit commitment to both musical excellence and sacred music, and the band maintained that dual identity across twenty-five years of recording. 'Carolina in the Pines' and 'Julie Ann' reflect the mix of secular and spiritual material that Lawson programmed with unusual care. The album sustains the standard Lawson set early in the band's history, when they were among the most innovative forces in progressive bluegrass.
