One Step Forward

The Lonesome River Band

Album · 1996 · Sugar Hill SH-C 3848

One Step Forward was released by the Lonesome River Band on Sugar Hill Records on 19 March 1996 (SH-C 3848 on cassette). Compared with the band’s 1994 album Old Country Town, two of the four members had changed: Kenny Smith plays rhythm and lead guitar in place of Tim Austin, and Don Rigsby plays mandolin in place of Dan Tyminski. Sammy Shelor plays banjo and Ronnie Bowman bass, and all four sing. Aubrey Haynie and Randy Howard each play fiddle on part of the record, and Jerry Douglas plays dobro and Weissenborn slide guitar. The band produced it themselves.

Smith had come to the band after working with Claire Lynch and the Front Porch String Band, and Rigsby had worked with Vern Gosdin. The twelve songs include “When You Go Walking (After Midnight),” “Say I Do,” “Crazy Heart,” “Katy Daley,” “Sorry County Blues” and “Georgia Mail.”
