“Carolyn (The Teenage Queen)” was written by Wandell “Wendy” Smith, who recorded it in 1967 with his band the Windy Mountain Ramblers for the Detroit label Fortune Records.
The song is a young man’s sweetheart song. Carolyn is the teenage queen of the title — the prettiest girl the singer knows — and the lyric carries the bright, simple devotion of first love.
The obscure 1960s single was later revived by the Lonesome River Band, who brought it to a wider bluegrass audience. The version heard here is by the Lonesome River Band.
