Our Kind of Grass cover

Our Kind of Grass was released in 1978 on Rebel Records (SLP 1569). Del McCoury, raised in York County, Pennsylvania, had played guitar and sung with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys from February 1963 to February 1964. The album was recorded in April 1976 at Track Recorders in Silver Spring, Maryland, with a further session on June 4, 1976, and Charles R. Freeland produced it.

McCoury plays guitar and sings lead on most of the songs, with Don Eldreth on mandolin (and fiddle on several tracks), Bill Runkle on banjo, Bill Poffinberger on fiddle and Dewey Renfro on bass; Calvin Stone adds percussion on the instrumental “Caracas.” Runkle sings lead on “Standing on the Mountain,” “Drifting with the Tide” and “Two More Years,” with McCoury on tenor. The twelve tracks also include “Whitehouse Blues,” “Birmingham Jail,” “Evil Hearted Woman,” “You Win Again” and a second instrumental, “Sweet Potato Rag.”
