Out in the Middle of Nowhere is a thirteen-track CD by Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa, released in September 2010 on Raincoe Music (catalog number 90510). Taylor sings lead and plays guitar. Emory Lester plays mandolin and sings tenor, Lee Marcus plays banjo and Kene Hyatt plays bass. Bluegrass Today, announcing the release, noted that Taylor had first made his mark in bluegrass with the U.S. Navy Band’s Country Current.
Taylor had spent 21 years in that band, and after Bill Emerson retired in 1993 he led its bluegrass unit until his own retirement in March 2008. He started Appaloosa later that year; the band first played together in 2008, and its first lineup was Lester, Dave Giegerich on resonator guitar, Mark Delaney on banjo and Kip Martin on bass. By the time of this record the band, according to its CD notes, had recorded two CDs and played in Scotland, England and Holland as well as across the United States.
The CD was recorded in Sharpsburg, Maryland, in a farmhouse built in 1855 and converted into a studio by engineer Todd Stotler. The band’s notes say the house was used as a hospital during the Battle of Antietam. The band describes the program as a mix of traditional bluegrass, five originals by Taylor, a Bob Dylan song and a couple of songs by David Parker. The title song opens the disc, and “Ole Slew Foot” and “Secret of the Waterfall” are among its tracks.
