Over the Hills to the Poorhouse brings together Lester Flatt and Mac Wiseman for a 1973 recording on RCA, pairing two veterans of the 1940s and 1950s bluegrass world whose careers had taken different paths over the intervening decades. Flatt had spent the previous two decades leading the Foggy Mountain Boys with Earl Scruggs before their acrimonious split in 1969, and Wiseman, a North Carolina-born singer with a smooth, radio-friendly tenor, had pursued a more country-oriented career. Their collaboration here draws on the sentimental country and bluegrass repertoire both men knew deeply, and the pairing of Flatt's relaxed baritone with Wiseman's higher, more polished voice produces harmonies that feel rooted and natural. The album is a reunion of stylistic allies from the same generation of musicians, recorded with the ease of performers who speak a common musical language.
