Ownself Blues (Patuxent Music CD-182, 2009) brings mandolin legend Frank Wakefield into a studio setting with a rotating cast of younger instrumental partners. Wakefield plays mandolin and sings throughout; Jordan Tice plays guitar; Audie Blaylock contributes rhythm guitar; Mike Munford plays banjo; Michael Cleveland plays fiddle; and Darrell Muller holds the bass. Wakefield had been a key figure in the progressive bluegrass world since the 1950s and '60s, a sideman to Ralph Stanley and a formative influence on the next generation of mandolin players. The album pairs his veteran command of the instrument with the energy of his collaborators, producing sessions that feel alive in the way of a working band rather than a formal recording project, and the program ranges across bluegrass originals, old-time material, and the occasional classical theme.
