Play Requests cover

Play Requests, released by Rebel Records in 1972 (SLP 1514), captures Ralph Stanley with one of his most consequential lineups: lead singer Roy Lee Centers alongside the teenaged Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley, whose voices would soon shape country and bluegrass independently. Most of the album was recorded August 31, 1971 at Roy Homer's basement studio in Clinton, Maryland, with additional tracks added in early 1972. The program reaches back to Stanley Brothers staples — Man of Constant Sorrow, Little Maggie, Pretty Polly, Flood of '57 — alongside the Clinch Mountain Backstep instrumental Ralph had been developing. For Skaggs and Whitley in particular, the Clinch Mountain Boys tenure that produced this album was their entry into the music's working life.
