“Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town” was released in 1978 on Warner Bros. Records (BSK 3141), produced by Brian Ahern and recorded in 1977 in Ahern’s Enactron Truck in Beverly Hills. It reached number three on the Billboard country albums chart and was later certified gold. “Two More Bottles of Wine,” written by Delbert McClinton, was a number one country single, and Dolly Parton’s “To Daddy” reached number three.

The songs include Utah Phillips’s “Green Rolling Hills,” sung as a duet with Fayssoux Starling and with Ricky Skaggs on viola and fiddle; two by Jesse Winchester, “My Songbird” and “Defying Gravity”; and two by Rodney Crowell, “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” (written with Donivan Cowart) and “I Ain’t Living Long Like This.” The credits list Emory Gordy Jr. on bass, John Ware on drums, Hank DeVito on pedal steel, Glen Hardin on piano and electric piano, Albert Lee and James Burton on electric guitars, Mickey Raphael on harmonica, and Ahern and Crowell on guitars alongside Harris. Willie Nelson sings harmony on “One Paper Kid,” and Rick Danko plays fiddle and Garth Hudson accordion on “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight.”
