"Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town," released in 1978 on Warner Bros. Records (BSK 3141), is Emmylou Harris's fifth studio album and a high-water mark of the Hot Band years, produced by Brian Ahern. The ensemble features Rodney Crowell (guitar, harmony vocals), Albert Lee (guitar), Glen D. Hardin (keyboards), Hank DeVito (pedal steel), and Emory Gordy Jr. (bass). Crowell was on the verge of departing for his own career, giving the record an inadvertent valedictory quality — his songwriting and harmonies are central to its sound. Bridging country tradition with singer-songwriter material from Jesse Winchester, Dolly Parton, and Crowell, the album is widely regarded as a defining progressive-country statement of the late 1970s and one of the finest records of Harris's long career.
