Quartet cover

Quartet was recorded at Bias Studios in Springfield, Virginia, and Rounder released it on 23 January 2007. It is the second album by Peter Rowan and Tony Rice together, and it documents the quartet they performed with in the 2000s: Rowan on guitar and lead vocals, Rice on lead guitar, Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin and Bryn Davies on bass. Davies sings tenor and Gilchrist high baritone on every song. Rice, who was diagnosed in 1994 with muscle tension dysphonia and stopped singing in performance, plays but is not credited with a vocal.

Rowan started in bluegrass in 1964 as a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, and in 1973 he and David Grisman formed Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia, Richard Greene and John Kahn. Both threads show up on the record. “The Walls of Time” is a song Rowan wrote with Monroe. Rowan’s own “Dust Bowl Children,” “Moonlight Midnight,” “Let the Harvest Go to Seed” and “Perfection” sit alongside Townes Van Zandt’s “To Live Is to Fly,” Patti Smith and Jay Dee Daugherty’s “Trespasses,” Todd Pons’s “Guardian Angels,” the traditional “Shady Grove,” and “The Sunny Side of the Mountain,” credited to Bob Gregory and Harry McAuliffe.
