Sharon Gilchrist
Sharon Gilchrist is a Texas-born mandolinist and bassist whose Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet seat, Uncle Earl tenure, and full mandolin curriculum at Peghead Nation make her one of the most respected contemporary string-band players and educators.
- American mandolinist, upright bassist, singer, composer, and educator born October 6, 1972 and raised in Southlake, Texas.
- Started mandolin at age eight under teacher Kevin Kirkpatrick; by age nine was performing in the family-and-friends band Blue Night Express, whose members at one point included a young Martie Erwin (later Maguire of the Dixie Chicks).
- Earned a BA in Mandolin Performance from Belmont University in Nashville.
- Became a full-time member of the Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet in 2005, alongside bassist/vocalist Bryn Davies.
- Played upright bass in the all-female old-time/bluegrass group Uncle Earl (roughly 2004–2006).
- Long list of collaborations includes Tony Furtado, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Tony Trischka, Scott Nygaard, John Reischman (Harmonic Tone Revealers), and Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands.
- Co-founded the trio Mary and Mars (2002–2004) with guitarist Ben Wright and bassist Josh Martin.
- Widely respected as an educator: private instructor, full mandolin curriculum at Peghead Nation, and teaches at music camps in the U.S. and abroad.
