New Time and Old Acoustic finds John Reischman applying his long-cultivated mandolin sensibility to a body of original tunes alongside selected traditional material. Reischman — who came up through the West Coast progressive-acoustic circles that overlapped with the Tony Rice Unit and the Good Ol' Persons in the late 1970s and 1980s, and who has led the Jaybirds for the past two decades — has built his style around clean tone, melodic patience, and a particular feel for the space between notes that distinguishes his playing from the more rhythmically aggressive Monroe-derived approaches. The arrangements draw on a small supporting cast of the Pacific Northwest progressive-bluegrass circle in which he has long worked. The repertoire balances Reischman's own writing — which has produced several pieces that have entered the broader instrumental canon — with traditional sources. The album is a quiet, characteristic entry in his ongoing catalog.
