“Midnight on the Water” is a waltz generally credited to the Texas fiddler Luke Thomasson, who is said to have composed it with his brother on the family porch around 1900. His grandson Benny Thomasson, a noted contest fiddler, did much to popularize the tune.
A gentle waltz in three-quarter time, played in a special tuning that lets the fiddle ring, “Midnight on the Water” is one of the best-loved slow tunes in the Texas and old-time repertoires.
