“Farewell Trion” was composed by the Alabama fiddler Joe Blaylock, born in 1854. He wrote it, the story goes, on returning home after being laid off from a mill in Trion, Georgia. It began as a two-part tune and passed down through his family.
An old-time fiddle tune in the key of C, “Farewell Trion” was carried into the present by the fiddler James Bryan, who learned it from Blaylock’s great-nephew and added a third part. It has become a favorite in old-time circles.
The tune reflects the mill-country roots of Appalachian fiddling.
