Real Time was the first album Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott made as a duo. They recorded it in November 1999 and produced it themselves, with Miles Wilkinson as engineer, and released it in 2000 on Howdy Skies (HS 1003), the label O’Brien had started in 1999. Full Light Records, the label Scott began in 2003, reissued it in 2005.

The thirteen tracks alternate guitar, mandolin, banjo and bouzouki between the two, with the lead and harmony roles trading too. O’Brien leads “Walk Beside Me,” “A House of Gold,” “More Love,” “Little Sadie” and “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burnin’,” with Scott on harmony; Scott leads “With a Memory Like Mine” (written with his father, Wayne Scott), “There Ain’t No Easy Way,” “Helen of Troy, Pennsylvania” and “Long Time Gone,” with O’Brien on harmony. “Weary Blues from Waiting” and “A House of Gold” are Hank Williams songs, “Five Rooms” was written by O’Brien with Robin and Linda Williams, and “The Second Mouse,” an instrumental with toy instruments and noises by Miles Wilkinson, was nominated for the 2001 Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance.

Scott’s “Long Time Gone” was recorded by the Dixie Chicks for their 2002 album Home, reached number 2 on the Billboard country chart, and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
