Rock My Soul, released by Sugar Hill in 1981, is Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver's first all-gospel album and the record that established the band's reputation as the foremost contemporary bluegrass-gospel act of its era. The lineup — Lawson on mandolin and lead, Jimmy Haley on guitar, Lou Reid on bass and harmony, Terry Baucom on banjo and bass vocals — leans into four-part harmony singing of unusual confidence, with three a cappella numbers (Sweet Chariot, Jesus Gave Me Water, Jesus I'll Never Forget) showcasing the vocal work alone. The album outsold the band's earlier secular work and set the pattern for the gospel records Quicksilver would return to throughout the 1980s.
