Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms

Del McCoury

Album · 1968 · Arhoolie F 5006

Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms (Arhoolie Records F 5006) is a studio album from Del McCoury, the York County, Pennsylvania guitarist and vocalist who became one of traditional bluegrass's most venerated lead singers through his years with Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and his subsequent leadership of the Dixie Pals, presenting early solo material in the unvarnished acoustic setting that suited his direct, unwavering tenor. McCoury plays guitar and sings; Bill Emerson plays banjo; Billy Baker plays fiddle; Dewey Renfro plays guitar and mandolin; and Wayne Yates holds the bass. Arhoolie Records, the El Cerrito, California folk-roots independent, documented traditional performers across multiple traditions, and this McCoury recording preserves the future Del McCoury Band founder at an early career phase when his reputation rested primarily on the Monroe years and his own regional performing work.
