The New Lost City Ramblers

Album · 1962

Rural Delivery #1 is a studio album from the New Lost City Ramblers — John Cohen, Mike Seeger, and Tom Paley — the old-time string band revival trio that became the foremost academic and performing advocates for pre-commercial Appalachian music from their formation in 1958, presenting the rural old-time and traditional repertoire in the acoustic format they developed from field recordings, shape-note songbooks, and direct contact with surviving practitioners of the tradition. Cohen plays guitar, banjo, and sings; Seeger plays banjo, fiddle, and multiple instruments; Paley plays guitar, banjo, and sings. The album draws from the southern Appalachian and rural old-time tradition — fiddle tunes, ballads, work songs, and religious pieces — in arrangements that honor the original performance contexts while making them available to the urban folk revival audience the Ramblers were instrumental in building.
