Rural Rhythm Presents Hylo Brown (Rural Rhythm RRHB 168) was released in March 1967. It is credited to Hylo Brown & His Timberliners, and its twenty tracks were recorded in Akron, Ohio, in late 1966 or early 1967 with Lee Sutton as producer. The session band is listed as Brown on vocals and guitar, Kenny Adkins on banjo, Roy Ross on mandolin, Danny Milhone on dobro, Charles Ross on bass and Gerald Evans on fiddle.

Most of the tracks run between about one and a half and two and a half minutes. They include the vocals “Blue Tail Fly,” “Weeping Willow,” “Handsome Molly” and “Walking Cane,” and the instrumentals “Banjo Signal,” “Lonesome Road Blues,” “Banjo on the Mountain” and “Five String Rock.” Twenty songs to an LP was the Rural Rhythm practice: Uncle Jim O’Neal founded the label in Arcadia, California, in 1955 and sold its records by mail order.

Brown was born in Johnson County, Kentucky, in 1922. He cut his first Capitol sides in November 1954 and joined Flatt & Scruggs on their Martha White Mills shows in 1957, where he renamed his band the Timberliners.
