Sad Songs and Waltzes is a 2000 Rounder Records retrospective (ROU-0399) presenting Keith Whitley's bluegrass and early country recordings from sessions with J.D. Crowe & The New South in 1982–83 — originally released in part as the Rounder album Somewhere Between — together with five previously unreleased tracks. The program features Doug Jernigan on steel guitar, Glen Duncan on fiddle, and harmony contributions from Dale Ann Bradley, Steve Gulley, Alison Krauss, and Carl Jackson. The archival release documents Whitley in transition between his Stanley Brothers–apprenticed bluegrass roots and the mainstream Nashville career that produced a string of number-one country hits in the late 1980s. Note: the catalog attributes this album to Dale Ann Bradley as primary artist, but this is a Keith Whitley project; Bradley appears as a harmony vocalist.
