Sad Songs & Waltzes is a 2000 Rounder Records album (11661-0399-2) of Keith Whitley recordings from 1982 and 1983, released September 12, 2000. Ten of its fifteen tracks make up the whole of Somewhere Between, the album Whitley sang as lead vocalist with J.D. Crowe & the New South on Rounder in 1982. The other five had not been released before. Four of them, including “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?,” were recorded on May 2 and 3, 1983, with Don Grant producing, and the fifth, the title song, dates from the 1982 sessions.
The recordings were remixed in 1999 by Crowe and engineer Steve Chandler, and several tracks carry overdubbed parts. The credited musicians include Doug Jernigan on steel guitar, Randy Howard and Glen Duncan on fiddle, Leo Jackson and Ricky Rector on acoustic guitar, and the Jordanaires on four songs. Dale Ann Bradley and Steve Gulley sing harmony on four tracks, Alison Krauss and Wes Hightower on three, and Carl Jackson sings tenor on “Another Town.” Crowe plays banjo on the two bluegrass numbers, “Girl from the Canyon” and “Another Town.”
The program opens with Lefty Frizzell’s “I Never Go Around Mirrors.” Whitley, who had begun his career in Ralph Stanley’s band in 1970 and left Crowe’s group for Nashville in 1983, died in 1989.
