Saluting the Louvin Brothers by Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys, released on Epic in 1969, is a natural act of tribute: the McReynolds brothers and the Louvins were exact contemporaries from neighboring corners of the Southeast who had both built careers on close-harmony singing and gospel-inflected original material. Jim and Jesse's vocal blend, while distinct from Charlie and Ira Louvin's, carries the same family-close warmth, and their approach to the Louvin songbook — respectful but not merely imitative — reveals genuine affinity rather than opportunistic name-borrowing. Jesse's mandolin adds a bluegrass coloring that the Louvins' own records largely lacked, giving the material a slightly different cast.
