Scenic Roots, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1990, is the last Seldom Scene album to feature the band's founder John Duffey on mandolin and high tenor — Duffey would die in 1996, and the album closes the second-generation Seldom Scene chapter that had begun with A Change of Scenery two years earlier. The lineup brings Duffey together with the post-classic players who had succeeded the band's founders. The program retains the harmony singing and progressive song choices the band had been defining since the 1970s. As a final document of John Duffey at the center of the group he had co-founded in 1971, the album holds a particular place in the Seldom Scene's working catalog.
