Shady Grove cover

Shady Grove is a 1996 collaboration between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, the most ambitious and cohesive of their Acoustic Disc recordings together. The album takes its name from the ancient Appalachian modal song and builds a program around old ballads, folk pieces, and traditional material that both men had carried for decades. 'Dreadful Wind and Rain' is one of the oldest songs in the English-language folk repertoire, and the pair's reading brings out its bleakness without melodrama. Grisman's mandolin and Garcia's guitar create a chamber-like intimacy, and both men sing with unusual directness. The album stands as one of the finest documents of Garcia's acoustic sensibility.
