Side By Side

BlueRidge

Album · 2004 · Sugar Hill SUG-CD 3981

Side by Side, released on Sugar Hill in 2004, was the third album from BlueRidge, a neo-traditional bluegrass band built around the powerful lead singing of Junior Sisk and the mandolin of Alan Bibey. Rounded out by Eddie Biggerstaff on bass, Joey Cox on banjo, and Alan Johnson on fiddle, the group specialized in hard-driving traditional bluegrass framed by three- and four-part harmony and contemporary songwriting. Sisk's keening, mountain-rooted voice — which would carry his own acclaimed solo career in the years that followed — is the band's center of gravity, while Bibey's clean, melodic mandolin supplies much of the instrumental color. The album sits firmly in the traditional wing of early-2000s bluegrass, prizing song and ensemble over display. Side by Side captures a short-lived but well-regarded band whose members would go on to shape the traditional scene well beyond its run.
