The Charlie Sizemore Band's Singing With the Angels, released on Rutabaga Records (RR-3017) in 1989, is the Kentucky vocalist's first album as a bandleader, recorded within weeks of his departure from Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys, where he had sung lead after replacing Keith Whitley at age sixteen. Sizemore plays guitar and sings; Shayne Bartley, mandolin; Jack Williams, banjo; Heath Van Winkle, upright bass; and Buddy Griffin, fiddle. A program of bluegrass gospel, the album launched Sizemore's solo career before subsequent releases on Rebel Records extended his audience. His 2024 induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame recognized a career that began in Stanley's band and extended across more than three decades as an independent artist.
