Red Allen recorded for Starday Records with his backing band the Kentuckians during a period when he was among the most active and recognized vocalists on the Washington DC-area bluegrass circuit. Allen had moved from Kentucky to the DC area, following the migration path that brought many Appalachian musicians to the mid-Atlantic region in the postwar decades, and had established himself within the dense local scene that centered on parks, clubs, and radio programming throughout the region.

Starday Records, a Houston-based independent label that had become one of the primary commercial homes for traditional country and bluegrass, provided a national distribution context for Allen's recordings during this period. "Trouble Round My Door" / "Beautiful Blue Eyes" (Starday 572), released in 1961, places Allen within the label's bluegrass roster at a moment when Starday was actively documenting the traditional end of the spectrum as Nashville's major labels moved toward the countrypolitan sound. The Kentuckians provided the instrumental framework that Allen's voice required — spare enough to let his hard tenor carry without competition, solid enough to drive the rhythm.

Allen's Starday work, including the recordings made with the Kentuckians, represents a sustained engagement with the commercial bluegrass market of the early 1960s at a time when the genre's relationship to mainstream country was becoming increasingly complicated.
