Sings Bluegrass (Capitol ST 1799, released 5 November 1962) was recorded in Nashville, at Columbia Recording Studio on 19 and 20 March 1962, with Ken Nelson producing. Rose Maddox, born in Boaz, Alabama, in 1925, had been recording since 1947 as part of the Maddox Brothers and Rose in California. Here she sings with Red Smiley on guitar, Don Reno on banjo, Tommy Jackson and Mack Magaha on fiddles, John Palmer on bass and Wayne Gailey on steel guitar; Bill Monroe plays mandolin on some tracks and Donna Stoneman on others.
Six of the twelve songs are credited to Monroe: “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” “Uncle Pen,” “Molly and Tenbrooks,” “My Rose of Old Kentucky,” “I’ll Meet You in Church Sunday Morning” and “The Old Crossroads Is Waitin’.” The others include Tommy Collins’s “Down, Down, Down,” Huddie Ledbetter’s “Cotton Fields” and “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms.”
