Slow Train Through Georgia (Rounder CD 11526, 1976) finds Norman Blake at the center of a warmly recorded acoustic session that draws on the Southern rural imagery and guitar traditions he absorbed growing up in the mountains of northwest Georgia. Blake — whose flatpicking synthesis of old-time, ragtime, and country guitar styles was already fully formed by the mid-1970s — is joined by his wife Nancy Blake on cello, Charlie Collins on guitar, and Peter Ostroushko on fiddle. The program weaves instrumental showcases with vocal pieces anchored in the landscapes and characters of the upland South. Made during the height of the acoustic revival, the album belongs to the sustained body of Rounder work that positioned Blake as one of the defining voices in American acoustic music.
