Something Old Something New and Some of Katy's Mountain Dew finds Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys in characteristically uncompromising form in 1971, a period when Stanley was consolidating his identity as a guardian of old-time Appalachian tradition following the death of his brother Carter four years earlier. The album's blend of older Stanley Brothers repertoire with newer songs reflects the careful stewardship that defined Ralph's post-Carter career. "Will You Miss Me" is a piece deeply associated with the brothers, and Stanley's near-a cappella treatment demonstrates his commitment to unadorned, ancient-sounding gospel singing.
