"Songs for Little Pickers," released in 1990 on Sugar Hill Records (SH-CD 3786), is a children's album by Doc Watson — traditional folk and old-time songs Watson learned as a child in Deep Gap, North Carolina, performed live at Centre Stage in Atlanta in March 1990 and at the Newport Folk Festival in August 1988. Watson is backed by Jack Lawrence on guitar; Lawrence had stepped in as his touring partner following the death of Watson's son and longtime musical partner Merle in a 1985 tractor accident. Warm and accessible without condescension, the album presents Watson playing to young audiences the same way he played to everyone — with equal authority, natural storytelling, and the same repertoire that had been his companion since childhood on the Blue Ridge.
