Songs of the Grateful Dead is a 2010 Woodstock Records album (WR33) by Jesse McReynolds & Friends with David Nelson & Stu Allen, presenting thirteen Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter compositions in traditional bluegrass arrangements. McReynolds — the mandolin half of Jim & Jesse and an innovator of cross-picking mandolin technique — had a documented personal connection to the project: Garcia and Sandy Rothman conducted a "bluegrass quest" in 1964 specifically to meet the McReynolds brothers. Rothman (banjo) and Nelson (guitar) — both longtime Garcia associates — join McReynolds, Stu Allen (guitar), and Steve Thomas (fiddle, keyboards) for sessions rooted in the acoustic tradition that shaped Garcia's musical imagination.
