Sounds of the Mountains (Rounder CD 0447) was released on 13 October 1998 and is the only album by the original Rambler’s Choice, the band Junior Sisk founded in 1998 after his time in Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz. His cousin Tim Massey, a songwriter who had written the 1995 IBMA Song of the Year, “Cold Virginia Night,” was a founding member and plays bass here.

The twelve tracks were recorded at Doobie Shea Studios with Sisk on guitar, Elmer Burchett on banjo, Alan Perdue on mandolin, Jimmy VanCleve on fiddle and Massey on bass. The lead singing is divided: Massey takes “Enough on My Mind,” “Mama’s Flowers” and two others, Sisk sings six, including “Shotgun Slade” and “Poor Rambler,” both credited to Ralph Stanley with co-writers, and Burchett leads “Sweet Country Lovin’.” Ronnie Bowman is credited as a writer on four songs, all of them co-written with Massey. Sisk wrote the title song; his father, H. C. Sisk Sr., is credited on “Springtime and Roses” and shares the writing credit on “No More Painting Up This Town.”

The group made only the one album. Afterward VanCleve, Perdue and Burchett went on to play with bands including Mountain Heart, IIIrd Tyme Out and Continental Divide, and Sisk and Massey re-formed Rambler’s Choice years later for Rebel Records.
