Southern Roots and Branches (Yesterday and Today) is a twelve-track album by Marty Raybon, released by Rural Rhythm Records (RHY 1097) in April 2012. Raybon, born in Greenville, Alabama, in 1959, was the lead singer of the country band Shenandoah from 1985 to 1997. Before that he played bluegrass in Florida: from 1975 he and his brother Tim were in a family band, American Bluegrass Express, with their father Buck on fiddle. He had come back to bluegrass with the album Full Circle in 2003. This record mixes new tracks with songs from that album.

The covers include Bill Monroe’s “Rocky Road Blues” and “White House Blues,” Jimmy Martin’s “Home Run Man” and Flatt & Scruggs’s “Down the Road.” Two Shenandoah songs, “Next to You, Next to Me” and “Ghost in This House,” appear in new arrangements, and there is Rodney Crowell’s “Long Hard Road.” The gospel songs include Squire Parsons’s “Beulah Land,” sung over acoustic guitar and harmony voices. “Big Pain” is a Raybon original, written with Billy Droze and John Fountain. The banjo-driven “Dirt Road Heartache” was the lead single.

Raybon sings lead and plays rhythm guitar, and his brother Tim sings harmony. The musicians include Justin Moses on banjo, mandolin, fiddle and dobro, Kenny Smith on guitar and Mark Fain on bass, with Tim Stafford, Shad Cobb, Rob Ickes, Bryan Sutton and Ashby Frank also taking part.
