Sunny Side of the Mountain, released by Decca in 1965, takes its title from the old country song Jimmy Martin had been performing since his Sunny Mountain Boys days began, and which he made effectively his own — the unhurried, almost stately reading he gave the chorus became the version every other bluegrass band measured against. Recorded with the band that gave Martin his most stable run on Decca, the album draws on his usual mix of mountain ballads, gospel quartets, and uptempo bluegrass material delivered in his unmistakable hard-driving rhythm. Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys at this period passed through an exceptional run of pickers, and the discipline he demanded of them shows in the tight ensemble work.
