Ted Lundy and the Southern Mountain Boys (GHP LP 909, 1972) captures the mid-Atlantic traditional bluegrass of Ted Lundy — a Virginia banjoist whose hard-driving three-finger style represented the border-country sound of the Shenandoah Valley and Appalachian piedmont. The recordings, made in 1962–63, were released on GHP, a German label that documented American bluegrass for a European audience during the height of the folk revival. Lundy is joined by Bob Paisley on guitar, Jerry Lundy on mandolin, Joe Edd King, and Wes Rineer on bass — a lineup that foreshadows the Ted Lundy, Bob Paisley & the Southern Mountain Boys unit that would go on to record for Rounder Records in the 1970s and 1980s. The German release reflects the early development of a European market for authentic American acoustic music that would deepen substantially over the following decades.
