That’s How We Run

That’s How We Run (Slab Town Records STR 11-01, 2011) is April Verch’s album of traditional music from the United States as well as Canada. Verch grew up in the Ottawa Valley of Ontario, took her first step-dancing lesson at three and her first fiddle lesson at six, and won the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship at 18 and the Canadian Open Old-Time Fiddlers’ Contest at 19. Her own site describes this record as the one on which she “reaches deep into the heart of traditional music of the United States,” alongside the Ottawa Valley repertoire she is best known for.

It was recorded and mixed by Chris Rosser at Hollow Reed Studio in Asheville, North Carolina, in February 2011, and mastered by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering in Boulder, Colorado, that March. Verch co-produced it with her husband Cody Walters, Clay Ross and Rosser. Verch plays fiddle and sings lead; Walters plays bass and clawhammer banjo and sings harmony; Ross plays guitar and sings harmony. The other musicians are Chris Sharp on guitar, Bob Carlin on clawhammer banjo, Rayna Gellert, Dirk Powell and Bobby Hicks as guest fiddlers, Kyle Dean Smith on banjo, Matthew Smith on pedal steel, Powell also on accordion, and Riley Baugus on lead vocal and clawhammer banjo. Baugus said of the project: “We love the music and we love what April does with it.”

The seventeen tracks mix fiddle tunes with songs. The tune titles include “Jim Shank/Ti-Jacques Jarret,” “Parker Brown/Possum Run,” “Indian Ate a Woodchuck,” “Durang’s Hornpipe” and “Ducks on the Millpond,” and the songs include “Still Trying,” “I’m Waiting to Hear You Call Me Darlin’” and the title track.
